Week #6

Did you see the widgit I added to the sidebar?!  How cool is that?!  Now you can see what my baby looks like as it grows!

So, I'm in Week 6 now, which means quite a lot in terms of brain development and the circulatory system of my baby.  The heart will start beating this week and the baby's tongue, nasal pits and "flippers" (future arms)will even start to develop!  To help brain development, it's recommended that I make sure Omega 3 and folic acid are in my diet.  Oh, and my baby is between 2-4 mm from head to bum.

How am I feeling?  Well, morning sickness hit with a vengence today.  I felt like death and, in all honesty, if the fate of the world rested on me popping out babies, we'd be screwed.  I'm sure it'll get better, but right now I feel like I can barely eat - ever! - and I'm still near the beginning.  Since morning sickness is apparently supposed to last from week 6 to 12, I've got 6 weeks to go.  Yay?

Any weird cravings?  I dislike sweet foods now; the thought of eating chocolate grosses me out.  I've tried eating cereal in the mornings and dairy disagrees with me.  I had a pop the other day (7 Up) and it tasted like club soda.  I find I really like mild cheese, fruits (specifically apples!) and veggies.  So, really, the food that I should be eating.  I've never been fond of apples, but I find them satisfying and easy to eat at work.

Mood swings?  Oh yes.  I cry easily now.  If it's sweet, I'll cry.  In moments of annoyance I'll feel frustrated and it'll make me cry.

That's all I can think of to say for right now.  I actually think I've lost a little weight (due to my distaste for most foods now) and my breasts are sore all the time.  I think I'll need to wear a sports bra to bed!  My libido (not that you care) is nil and I feel bad for Kevin because of it!!  Well, hopefully it'll come back in the next trimester!

Doctor Appointment #1

I had my first doctor's appointment today - Aug 26, 2010 - and it was just a medical background check, question period.  And I can't remember the guy's name.  And I think he said he was just filling in, so I'm assuming that I'll be seeing someone the next time??  If not, I'll find out his name!

I received a huge stack of booklets, pamphlets, etc:
*Baby's Best Chance: Parent's Handbook of Pregnancy and Baby Care (BC Goverment)
*Prenatal Genetic Screening pamphlet (Provincial Health Services Authority)
*Your Baby's Journey: Prince George's guide to services and information from pregnancy to parenting (Northern Health Authority)
*forms for blood work
*Parents Canada magazine
*Prenatal registry

Wow.  So, we talked about health history, both mine and my family's, as well as drink/drug/smoking usages.  Since I don't do any of those, I think we're good to go.  We did discuss prenatal genetic testing - which would test to see if my baby could have trisomy 25, down syndrome or spinabifida - but usually those tests are more relevant if the mother's age is over 35.  Since those tests are invasive, they're only helpful if the baby is at risk of a genetic defect.  And if you plan on doing anything about it (abortion, adoption, etc).  If you're just curious, it would definitely not be recommended.

I have another appointment scheduled for September 10th and I should definitely have my blood taken by then, so we'll do a physical exam as well as discuss results from that!

Welcome!

I'm pregnant!

I've been asked a few times, by different people, how I'm feeling, how things are going, etc, so I thought I'd blog about it!  I dislike keeping things to myself and Facebook is definitely off-limits (for right now), so I thought I'd create a site where I could update and tell everyone all at once!  I'm also incredibly lazy that way, so this works well for me.

At this moment I'm unsure how often I'll be updating, especially since right now my baby is still such a wee thing, but since this whole baby development thing is so fascinating, I'm thinking that I'll update every week - Fridays - since that's how my week works.  It'll consist mainly of how big baby is and what will be going on that week; but if I have a doctor's appointment or something special happens I'll update more often.

Some background info:

Kevin and I have been actively trying to concieve since St. Patrick's Day (so, March 17, 2010) and we found out about the pregnancy on August 15, 2010.  I took 2 pregnancy tests and both came back positive.  (In case you were wondering why I took two...I bought the first one at the Dollarama.  I figured that I'd pay the $1.25 now and if it was positive, I'd pay the $10 later.  As it turned out, Janet had a spare test that she gave to me.)

My last period was July 16, 2010 and my due date is approximately April 23, 2011.  So that means that tomorrow I'm officially 6 weeks pregnant!  (And for those of you keeping track of my due date, Janet has already called dibs on May 2 and Liz has May 3.  We're starting the baby pool early!)

Feel free to comment, ask questions, etc!
